Huw Lobb ran the 22 mile Man vs Horse Marathon in 2:05, 2 minutes faster than the fastest horse.


Because our ancestors were hunter gatherers, humans are genetically primed to cover long distances and outlast their prey.

Over millions of years we have developed a naturally efficient running form, so while there may be faster animals, nothing else touches humans for endurance.

Another factor tipping the balance toward the human competitor is that horses overheat more quickly

Most years, the horse wins, but in 2004, Huw Lobb won by two minutes, winning the £25,000 prize.
